“Having the eyes of your heart enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints”. Ephesians 1: 18
The heart has eyes. It can be darkened or enlightened, misled or led unto the right path. The Bible talks about both spiritual and physical eyes as the lamp of the body. The above verse demonstrates that there exists a higher dimension of seeing that transcends what the natural eyes can perceive or see thus shielding the believers from error. Gehazi’s spiritual eyes were closed; Elijah had to pray to God to open them up for him to see the reality around him. Likewise, we can walk like blind men if unaware of this reality and dependency on God.
Could it be that all that you see is not all that there is to be seen?
Jeremiah 1: 11 “…What do you see, Jeremiah?” “I see the branch of an almond tree’’… 12 The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly…”. This further shows that it is possible to see a miss or be deceived by our senses if God is not by our side. We can do nothing without the Holy Spirit. This is the reason many Christians read the Bible verses over and over, thousands of times but one fine day that very verse will stand out differently; that verse will shine and will be opened to them, then they can understand the mysteries behind it.
There is what we are not allowed to see. Therefore, let’s beware of the forbidden knowledge as seen in Genesis 3: 7 “And the eyes of them both were opened…”. There is a knowledge that is not lawful for Christians to pursue. At times in our quest of knowledge, we open ourselves up to all sorts of philosophies whose only aim is destroying our souls. The new age teachings and experiences, the third eye and use of chakra, spiritual energy that can propel someone into some realms of knowledge and mind controls are evil in disguise; it takes the Holy Spirit to open us up to these dimensions. No one can raise to a certainly level of knowledge unless one is led.
Ephesian 1:18 reminds us that what we need in these days is more of the Holy Spirit’s guidance to navigate through the vicissitudes of life. Just like the naked eye without a luminous source cannot see, so are Christians helpless without the Holy Spirit.
